Pennsauken (April 30, 2007) – Most Reverend Joseph A. Galante, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Camden, will preside at a dedication ceremony for the new Stonegate at St. Stephen senior housing development. stonegate-003.gif

The 76-unit senior housing project is co-sponsored by the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation of the Diocese of Camden, Inc. and St. Stephen Catholic Church, Pennsauken. Funding for the $9.7 million project was provided by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development ($7.9M), the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs ($1.2M) and the Camden County Community Development Office ($600K).

“Affordable housing is a basic human right. The lack of affordable housing is a major concern not only in South Jersey but in the entire state. It is our hope that this project will contribute toward the well-being of seniors who so often lack access to affordable, high-quality housing,” said Bishop Galante.

When Stonegate opened for occupancy on March 1, it upped the diocese’s affordable housing portfolio to 558-units for low income family and senior households. In March, the diocese broke ground on a similar project, Haven House at St. John of God in North Cape May.  Reverend Stanley Witkowski, pastor of St. Stephen Church, is excited about and pleased with the project.

“This is a wonderful asset for Pennsauken and we look forward to incorporating inter-generational activities with the students from the St. Stephen School.” “We work really hard to develop cost-effective, affordable housing with a luxury feel,” said Curtis H. Johnson, Jr., executive director of the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation. “We think residents will really enjoy living here.”
