6.15.06 "Summer in the City" Kicks Off

VENTNOR (June 15, 2005) – High School teenagers are invited to participate in Summer in the City here beginning July 5 and ending July 10 and hosted by the Diocese of Camden Office of Youth Ministry.

In past year, participants in the Summer in the City program have been from Cherry Hill, Westmont, Glassboro, Turnersville, Haddonfield, Millville as well as Atlantic City and Mays Landing. Teenagers will stay at St. James Church in Ventnor, bringing just basic necessities like sleeping bags, toiletry items and work clothes.

Each day, Summer in the City by the Sea “begins and ends with prayer and Mass”, according to Youth Ministry Coordinator Sean Paul Murray, who is overseeing the program. Registration is continuing during the month of June and the cost is $50. Youth attending the program have either just finished their freshman year of high school or have just graduated high school, he said.

Hosted by the Office of Youth Ministry, the weeklong program provides an opportunity for teens of various ethnic and economic backgrounds from throughout the six-county diocese to assist at the Catholic Charities Office in Atlantic City; the Atlantic City Rescue Mission; and at the South Jersey Food Bank in Egg Harbor Township, Murray said. The program itself is designed to provide teenagers in the diocese “with a chance to perform community service as well as empower them to work toward positive change within themselves,” said Father Tom Barcellona, Executive Director of the Office of Youth Ministry.

To register, email smurray@camdendiocese.org or call him directly at the Youth Ministry Office at 856-227-8250. Registration forms are also available online visiting the Youth Ministry website at www.464edee1fa.nxcli.io.
