Colin Hughes, a recent graduate of Resurrection Catholic School in Cherry Hill, was this year’s recipient of the David T. Coghlan Young Catholic Leader Award Scholarship, with $1,000 going toward his tuition to Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill, in the fall.
Colin was presented the award during his eighth grade class graduation, held at Christ Our Light Parish, Cherry Hill, on June 8.
“Two of the most important things that my family and Catholic school have taught me are to be committed to achieving your goals, and the importance of service to others,” Colin wrote in an essay applying for the scholarship.
“I want to go to a Catholic high school so that I can continue to grow in my faith,” he wrote.
Two other students received $500 tuition scholarships: Grace Martorano, an eighth grader from Our Lady of Hope Regional School in Blackwood, who will attend Camden Catholic High School; and Kayla Tran, an eighth grader at Our Lady Star of the Sea Regional School in Atlantic City, who will attend Holy Spirit High School in Absecon.
Each year, the Coghlan Scholarship is given to three students, chosen by the Scholarship Committee from eighth grade applicants in the elementary schools, chosen by their principal, and attending diocesan high schools.
The scholarship is in memory of David T. Coghlan, who served as superintendent of schools in the Diocese of Camden from 1990-2003. He died in 2005.
