“Through pastoral outreach to victims and their families, the diocesan bishop or his representative is to offer to meet with them, to listen with patience and compassion to their experiences and concerns, and to share the ‘profound sense of solidarity and concern’ expressed by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, in his Address to the Cardinals of the United States and Conference Officers (April 23, 2002).”
Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, Article 1
On June 5, 2013, Bishop Dennis Sullivan wrote a letter which promulgates the revised Standards for the Protection of Children and Young People which included recent modifications and notations by the Diocesan Review Board. In his letter, Bishop Sullivan writes that “the abuse of a child is not only atrociously sinful but it is also a terrible betrayal of innocence and trust.” Bishop’s letter
Bishop Sullivan notes that the Diocese of Camden is vigilant in protecting the children entrusted into our care and that vigilance has been enhanced “by our maintenance of a toll-free number to report abuse, as well as the provision of law enforcement contact information on our website.”
Bishop Sullivan writes, “Along with education and prevention our counseling outreach program – which is overseen by a Clinical Advisory Panel – has a long history of being professionally adept at helping those who have been victimized. I, of course, am ready to meet with victims of abuse in order to apologize to them and offer such guidance and support as I am able to provide.”
