It appears that the Holy See has not rejected the U.S. bishops’ sexual abuse policy but is seeking to refine it to ensure that its provisions are consistent with Church law, particularly due process, and that there is greater clarity with regard to terminology and language.
It is also clear that the Holy See is in complete solidarity with the U.S. bishops in their firm condemnation of sexual abuse and will work expeditiously with the U.S. bishops to address remaining concerns, which should only enhance common understanding and support of the bishops’ policy. As the joint U.S.-Vatican commission undertakes this temporary review, what will not change is the Diocese of Camden’s commitment to protecting young people.
Since the Holy See has not prohibited dioceses from implementing the Charter, this diocese will continue to build on the progress already made to comply with it, along with the new recommendations of its review panel. As we do so, we renew our determination to do everything possible to eradicate sexual abuse while respecting through due process the rights of all involved.
