Mass for Ugandan Martyrs

The Fourth Annual Mass for the Ugandan Martyrs took place June 1 at Holy Angels Parish, St. Patrick Church in Woodbury, remembering the day on Ascension Thursday in May 1886, when Charles Lwanga and 22 Christian converts were murdered for their faith by King Mwanga of Buganda, now part of Uganda.

Lwanga and the men and boys were canonized in 1964 by Pope Paul VI, and recognized as the “founding fathers” of the church in modern Africa.

Father Robert Hughes, vicar general, and Msgr. Leonard Scott celebrated the Mass. (photos by Alan Dumoff for the Catholic Star Herald)
