Housing Agency wins Merit Award

The Diocese of Camden Housing Services Corporation has been named a winner of the 2015 Housing and Community Development Merit Award from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).
The award, to be presented at the group’s annual convention July 30 in Austin, Texas, recognizes the diocesan agency’s renovation project for the Village Apartments of Cherry Hill. The site was rededicated by Bishop Dennis Sullivan April 30.

The Village Apartments, originally built in 1983, is a garden-style development for low-income frail elderly and/or disabled people. Residents pay 30 percent of their incomes towards rent while a Housing and Urban Development federal subsidy pays the balance.
The renovation included improvements to the site’s storm water management, façade, windows, roofs, energy conservation and the additions of decks and patios to apartments. The project began in the spring of 2010 and was completed this year.
The award, said Curtis Johnson, director of the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation, “recognizes the hard work of the entire staff and the commitment to mission of the Diocese of Camden, the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation and Village Apartments, Inc., boards in serving out low-income senior residents. It also recognizes our funders and the municipalities we work within.”
