A careful reading of the Holy Father’s complex and nuanced remarks shows that his words were not an attack on the religion of Islam. Rather, he was expressing concern about those who would use violence in the name of religion, since violence is incompatible with God himself.
The Holy Father has always emphasized the great respect he has for Islam and Sunday he said he was deeply sorry that his remarks were interpreted in a way that offended anyone. That some would ferment anger and violence even after the Holy Father clarified his remarks is completely unacceptable and deserves condemnation by all people of good will.
The Church, under the courageous leadership of the Holy Father, remains committed to ongoing dialogue with our Muslim brothers and sisters, as we seek opportunities that will further understanding and mutual respect.
