What started as a two-week stopgap became a new way of teaching and learning in South Jersey Catholic schools, at least for spring semester 2020. Since school buildings closed in mid-March, parents have offered their thanks with comments, photos and videos on social media pages. Principals and teachers have received an influx of emails and letters from parents as well. What follows is a representative expression of gratitude from school parents. Unless otherwise noted, the comments came in emails to school leaders or teachers.
Cape Trinity Catholic School, Wildwood
“Billy is learning new things and is engaged the whole time… I was pleasantly surprised that he even had art, music and gym! When I speak to parents whose children are in other schools, they complain that the children are only reviewing things online or are finished too quickly. I say (with some pride, I admit) that it’s not the case with us. It can’t be easy for you and the other teachers to prep varied lessons, post, check all the kid’s comments and grade papers. I can’t imagine how you are all accomplishing what you’re accomplishing! — Jessica Sherwen
Joseph had a very hard time in the beginning of all this. He kept telling me I wasn’t his teacher haha… He still misses it a lot but keeping the routine of school work is helping… You are doing an amazing job with keeping these kids learning and having fun! — Nicole Burlew-Arcuri
Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester (excerpts below are from parent-created videos on Gloucester Catholic website)
“We can’t say how proud we are to be the parents of Gloucester Catholic students and how glad we are for the support the school has shown through this unusual situation. It changed all of our lives in a dramatic way and we’re very happy to be able to say thank you Gloucester Catholic and we can’t wait to be back.” — Jim and Kelly O’Neill
“The communication and dedication that the entire staff has shown not only the parents and the children, but the community, has been incredible… Thank you Gloucester Catholic for everything you have done for our families during this time.” — Doug and Joan Stetser
“On one of the toughest days of our quarantine, a member of the Gloucester Catholic family came out to deliver a lawn sign. And some hope.” — Andrea and Brian Madalion
Holy Angels Catholic School, Woodbury
“Since remote learning started, the parents have definitely been more vocal about their appreciation for teachers and school staff. I have received videos, wonderful emails, letters from students, and even flowers in the mail!” — Teacher at Holy Angels Catholic School, Woodbury
“Thank you for all that you do for the school. It’s abundantly clear that you go above and beyond… During this time of crisis as a result of COVID-19, we have experienced the teacher’s dedication and capability as they prepare their lessons on-line, meet the students virtually each week, and check on how students are doing both academically and emotionally.” — Genevieve Pawela
Our Lady Star of the Sea Regional School, Atlantic City
“You did a great job with everything, much better than my professors at Stockton. I am grateful for all your help and support!” — Ema’s mom, grade 1
Paul VI High School, Haddonfield
“Thank you for your regular communications about how PVI is handling this crisis… Your faculty were out in front with putting lessons and assignments online early, which was a signal to me as a parent that things would keep on going even under these most trying circumstances… You and they should be proud of getting this together so quickly.” — Annette Bakley
Resurrection Catholic School, Cherry Hill
“I’ll praise RCS on any day — but today — my Drew turned four and all three of his teachers drove to our home, made a sign for him, one teacher and her whole family even wore Christmas shirts because Drew loves Christmas. This is why we chose Catholic school — the extra above and beyond.” — Kerri Ryan (Facebook post)
“Thank you everyone at Resurrection Catholic for keeping our children and families healthy and for putting this platform together in record time… This is our first year at RCS and you guys have proven that the faculty is AMAZING!!!” — Andrea Lynn LaPlaca, (Facebook post)
Saint John Paul II Regional School, Stratford
“My home office is on the other side of my son’s wall where his desk is located and where he participates in his “zoom” classes. I have the privilege of hearing parts of the classes and interactions. Each week I have noticed the “zoom” classes getting more interactive and the teachers have come up with different ways to engage the students. This is not easy to do, especially with 8th graders…. St. John Paul II’s administration and teachers have gone above and beyond during this pandemic.” — Robyn Hart (letter to Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Bill Watson)
Saint Joseph Regional School, Somers Point
“My wife and I are overjoyed at how our son Marcos has progressed through first grade during his first year at St. Joseph. Mrs. Gentile has done a wonderful and professional job this year in class and now remotely.” — Chris and Digna Ryan
“These teachers have genuinely cared for my children and have taken the time to know and understand them. While we are so sad that Ava’s final year has come to an abrupt end, we are forever grateful for the memories she has made there and the foundation she has received that I know will lead her to great things in her life. So thank you, from the bottom of our hearts to all of you for all that you have done and continue to do.” — The Fortucci Family

“Grateful for your time during this time of uncertainty and adjustment. We appreciate that you return emails immediately and very helpful as needed.” Many thanks to entire staff at St Mary’s school. — Lily (grade 4) and her family
“Your staff has done a phenomenal job in this unprecedented time. In a very short period, SMS was able to convert to a remote learning institution without compromising education, morals, or fun. My children have adjusted well and have remained excited, engaged, and interested in learning. Their teachers and staff have gone above and beyond to continue to provide a sound educational experience during this time… every family may not be having the same experience, but it’s always nice to hear good news too. — The Trail family
St. Mary School, Vineland
“The speed and organization that went into putting together an at-home schooling program is nothing short of amazing! Mrs. Sergi… has gone above and beyond in not only the preparation of the daily lesson plans, and made them very easy to follow… , [she] is always available by email and phone, and responds extremely promptly, sometimes late at night. Thankfully technology has allowed Mrs. Sergi to even “Facetime” with Jacob as needed to clarify anything Jacob (or us) might be having a problem understanding… from us to you and your faculty, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. — Dan and Vicki Mourning
Saint Vincent De Paul Regional School, Mays Landing
“Let me use this opportunity to tell you how pleased we are with how you and the other staff members are handling the virus situation. It’s almost impossible, but we appreciate your hard work and dedication to the school and students. I never thought we’d be as deep into it as we are, but you’ve kept the school upright, and the kids on a schedule.” — Raymond Luciano
