Designate Archbishop John P. Foley and Archbishop Daniel N. DiNardo

It was with great joy that I learned of the naming of Archbishop John Foley and Archbishop Daniel DiNardo (Galveston/Houston) as Cardinal-designates by Pope Benedict XVI.
It is a great day for Catholics in the Philadelphia-South Jersey region, who know Archbishop Foley so well. It is a great day for the Church in the Southwestern United States, especially Texas, where I had spent more than 11 years as bishop. It is a great day for the Church in the United States, which will now have two new Cardinals. It is a great day for the Church worldwide, which celebrates together the dedication and consequential work of the newly-named Cardinal-designates.
For me, it is especially gratifying, given my long association with both Archbishops Foley and DiNardo, that these two men have been recognized in this special way by the Holy Father. They both have my prayers and best wishes as they receive this honor and commit themselves anew to the Church’s mission and the service of God’s people.
