NORTH CAPE MAY (March 22, 2007) – Groundbreaking is set for a new senior housing project in North Cape May:
The new 76-unit Haven House at St. John of God Senior Housing Development is co-sponsored by the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation of the Diocese of Camden, Inc. and St. John of God Roman Catholic Church, North Cape May. Funding for the $12.8 million project was provided by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD-$10.9M), the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA-$1.125M) and the Federal Home Loan Bank (FLHB-$770K). Rev. Monsignor John H. Burton, Vicar General for the Diocese of Camden will preside at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Affordable housing is a basic human right,” said Most Reverend Joseph A. Galante, Bishop of Camden.
“We as a Church are committed to ensuring that every person, especially the most vulnerable among us, has access to decent, affordable housing that not only provides adequate shelter but allows the person to live in a way worthy of their God-given dignity.”
Reverend Richard L. Forbes, Pastor of St. John of God Church, expressed excitement about the project. “This is a wonderful asset for Lower Township where the need for affordable senior housing is great. St. John of God Church is happy to contribute to a project that helps the whole community.”
Haven House Groundbreaking -The Diocesan Housing Services Corporation currently offers 550-units of affordable housing to low income family and senior households at Shepherd’s Farm Senior Housing (Thorofare), Victorian Towers (Cape May), Village Apartments (Cherry Hill), Davenport Village (Hainesport) and Stonegate at St. Stephen Senior Housing (Pennsauken). “Haven House is a continuation of our strategy to provide more affordable senior housing” explained Peter O’Connor, President of the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation Board of Trustees.
“We just opened on March 1 a similar project, Stonegate at St. Stephen Senior Housing in Pennsauken, and its 75 units are almost fully occupied,” he added. “Other area senior housing projects have very long waiting lists including our own Victorian Towers, so this project will meet an important need of seniors in this area of South Jersey,” said Curtis H. Johnson, Jr., executive director of the Diocesan Housing Services Corporation.
