As Bishop of the Diocese of Camden and on behalf of the faithful in South Jersey, I welcome the appointment by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, of Bishop-elect Kevin Sweeney as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Paterson.
Bishop-elect Sweeney’s service in a variety of diocesan posts and as pastor of Saint Michael’s Parish in the Diocese of Brooklyn will serve him well as he is called upon to shepherd God’s people in Northwest New Jersey. As the son of Irish immigrants, the Bishop-elect surely understands the needs of immigrants and his facility with the Spanish language will be an asset to him.
I look forward to working with the new bishop and express heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Arthur Serratelli for his 16 years of faithful service to the Diocese of Patterson and the Church in New Jersey.
