10.13.05 Statement on Diocese on Tentative Contract Agreement

A tentative agreement was reached late this afternoon between the Diocese of Camden and the Catholic Teacher’s Union, representing lay teachers from Camden Catholic, Paul VI, and Holy Spirit High Schools. The tentative agreement awaits ratification by the full membership early next week.

The tentative agreement–the terms of which will be announced after ratification–averts a strike that had been announced for October 17 and classes at the three high schools will be in session Monday. The Diocese of Camden is pleased that agreement has been reached and that instruction to students will be uninterrupted. We believe the new agreement, once ratified, will be a win-win for all involved.

It will be good for teachers–who will receive fair salary increases and comprehensive health benefits–without putting undue pressure on tuition rates, thereby allowing Catholic high schools to remain affordable for parents who choose a values-based education for their children. We thank teachers for their dedication and commitment. We thank the negotiation teams for their good faith efforts at reaching a tentative agreement. We thank all those who support and help make Catholic high schools places of excellence for our young people.
