Bishop Galante appoints new pastors

Bishop Joseph A. Galante announces the following pastor assignments:

— Father E. Joseph Byerley, from Pastor, St. Joseph, Swedesboro and Convener in the merging of Mary, Mother of the Church, Bellmawr-St. Francis de Sales, Barrington-and St. Gregory, Magnolia, to Pastor, St. Rose of Lima, Haddon Heights, for a six-year term effective April 20.

— Father Michael J. Field, from Pastor, Queen of Heaven, Cherry Hill, to Pastor, St. Ann, Wildwood, for a six-year term, effective April 27.

— Msgr. John T. Frey, from Pastor, St. Rose of Lima, Haddon Heights, to Pastor, Maris Stella, Avalon for a six-year term, effective April 20. Msgr. Frey will continue as Convener in teh merging of Maris Stella, Avalon, and St. Paul, Stone Harbor. 

Father Byerley, 45, a graduate of Pontifical Lateran University in Vatican City, Italy, was ordained on July 7, 1993 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden.  His first assignment was as summer parochial vicar at St. Michael, Gibbstown.  After 10 months of advanced studies at the North American College in Rome, Father Byerley returned to the Camden Diocese as parochial vicar at St. Patrick, Woodbury from 1994-98.

From June 2005-present, Father Byerley has served as pastor at St. Joseph. In September of last year, he was appointed Priest Convener in the pending merger of Mary, Mother of the Church-St. Francis de Sales-and St. Gregory.

Father Byerley was also teacher at Paul VI High School, Haddon Township; Diocesan Liaison for Pilgrims of Faith Marian. He was director of guidance for Paul VI, 2004-05, and in 2005 he was appointed chairperson of the Board of Trustees.

Father Field, 54, a graduate of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Mahwah, N.J., was ordained on May 29, 1982. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart, Vineland, where he served 1982-86.  Father Field’s first pastorship was at St. Joseph, Swedesboro, 2002-05.

He served on the Presbyteral Council and was a member and  director of the Diocesan Commission of the RCIA.

Msgr. Frey, 65, studied at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, N.J. and was ordained on May 23, 1970 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden. 

His first assignment was as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Grace, Somerdale, 1970-73. He has been pastor at St. Rose of Lima from 2002-present. Before that, he was pastor at St. Isidore, Vineland, 1995-2002.

Msgr. Frey is spiritual director of the Cursillo Movement and has served as Clergy Personnel Director and Episcopal Vicar for Priestly Life and Development.

He has been a member of the Committee on Pastoral Ministry, Priests’ Council, Presbyteral Council and Diocesan Ecumenical Commission. He also is chaplain of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council, Haddon Heights.
