Vatican expert John Allen to address annual Catholic Charities’ Dinner April 25

John L. Allen, Jr., senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter,

will be the keynote speaker at the annual Catholic Charities Diocese of Camden “Justice for ALL” Awards Dinner on Thurs., April 25, 5:30-9:30 p.m. at the Adelphia Grand Ballroom in Deptford.

2013 has been a year of extraordinary news from Rome. Mr. Allen will provide analysis and perspective on the events that included the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis, who has galvanized the world with his statements on social justice and the obligation of Catholics to care for the poor and vulnerable.

Besides his work with the National Catholic Reporter, Allen’s writings have appeared in the New York Times and publications around the world, and he was a frequent guest on CNN during the papal transition and election. He has written several books about the Church, including two biographies of Pope Benedict, one on Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, and another on Opus Dei. Allen has earned a reputation for objectivity and honesty in reporting.

Ken Woodward, former religion editor for Newsweek, describes Allen as “the journalist other reporters—and not a few cardinals—look to for the inside story.” According to the London Tablet, Allen is “the most authoritative Vatican writer in the English language.”

The dinner will also include a talk by Bishop Dennis Sullivan of Camden and an award will be presented to Camden emeritus Bishop Joseph Galante for his leadership in promoting charity and justice.
