Catholic Relief Services in the Philippines Responding to Typhoon Haiyan

On Fri., Nov. 8, Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines.

This storm, the equivalent of a Category 5 Hurricane, with sustained winds of over 195 miles per hour, caused immense and catastrophic devastation across the Philippines. Death tolls are expected to reach the thousands.

The Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development reports that there are approximately 9.5 million people affected by the typhoon over 9 regions, with three million people located within 30 miles of the direct path. There are already over half a million people displaced, with numbers expected to rise. The hardest hit areas are without water, electricity, food, and other supplies. Catholic Relief Services is already on the ground mobilizing resources to help those most affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

The Camden Diocese Catholic Relief Services Committee encourages you to PRAY, LEARN, and DONATE to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan:

PRAY

Join us in praying for the people suffering after Typhoon Haiyan, for those who lost their lives, their loved ones, their homes, and their communities, as well as those working to assist those in need:

Prayer for the Philippines (provided by CRS)

God, who quiets great winds and stills rough seas
We ask your protection for the people of the Philippines.
Comfort them in their fear.
Stay close to them in their danger.

And we ask the intercession of Your Blessed Mother
That together with her and with all your holy saints
We may stand in solidarity with our Filipino brothers and sisters
     through their darkest hour
     through their longest night.
Give us the courage to remain steadfast
To reach out to them in their need
To comfort them in their sorrow
To hold them as closely as You hold them
To see them through to morning.

Amen.

LEARN

Learn more about the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan and the response by Catholic Relief Services. According to Joe Curry, CRS Philippines country representative, “Catholic Relief Services, our partners and other agencies are in the process of mobilizing resources to help the government and the most affected areas. The typhoon was powerful and expansive, hitting a number of islands as a super typhoon. Based on other typhoons, like Typhoon Bopha last year, we can expect that this was a catastrophic typhoon, not only for one island but many.” The relief effort in the Philippines is great. CRS assessment teams have already flown to Cebu City and reached Leyte by boat, and will prioritize emergency shelter, water and sanitation, household relief items (blankets, kitchen items, cookware), potable water, and toilets.
